In honor of my project for this class, which is a song that I wrote and recorded about Desmond and his adventures in the LOST episode “Flashes Before Your Eyes”, I thought I would explore another musical LOST reference. The band Oasis has been heavily referenced in the context of LOST. The story of Charlie and his brother Liam is a direct parody of the Gallagher brothers from the band Oasis. Charlie’s brother Liam is even named directly after Liam Gallagher.
The famous turmoil between these two musical brothers is legendary, and eventually led to the group disbanding for good. This relationship is explored in LOST through the fictional band Driveshaft. The conflict between Charlie and Liam eventually breaks Driveshaft up. In a pivitol moment on the show, Liam sings the lead vocal on Driveshaft’s hit song during a show, which makes Charlie very angry. This can be traced back to the Oasis feud between the brothers as to who would ing on certain songs, based on who wrote them.
Driveshaft’s rise to fame plays a large part in the first season of LOST. The main difference between the two bands is that Oasis had multiple hit albums and several successful singles, especially Wonderwall, which Charlie can be seen playing on the actual show. Driveshaft only had one hit on the show “You All Everybody” which is played repeatedly through. Eventually though Charlie comes to terms with his feud with his brother. The same can not be said for the now defunct Oasis.
