Released in 1990, Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall” is arguably one of the finest films ever made. Based on the short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick, “Total Recall” stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a construction worker in the year 2084. Longing for a more exciting life, Quaid pays for a “virtual vacation” to be planted into his mind by a company called Rekall. However, it is soon discovered by the workers at Rekall that Quaid has already had his mind wiped, and that he is actually a secret agent… or is he?
Much like the film “Predator”, “Total Recall” is a film that serves as a clear depiction of Arnold Schwarzenegger in what can be assumed to be his natural habitat. The 1980s and 1990s were full of action films of all kinds that featured Schwarzenegger, and allowed him to prove that he is capable of defeating the greatest hunter from outer space, giving an atmosphere suitable for human life to Mars, and secure a Turboman doll for his young son, among other impossible tasks. It is my opinion that such skills were what made Schwarzenegger the clear choice to be Governor of California in 2003.
